Intersex Pride Flag
The intersex flag was created in July 2013 by Morgan Carpenter of Intersex Human Rights Australia (then OII Australia). Intersex people are born with sex characteristics, such as chromosomes, hormones or anatomy, that don't fit typical definitions of male or female. The flag has a yellow background with an unbroken purple circle at its centre. Carpenter chose yellow and purple because they aren't seen as gendered colours, unlike blue and pink. The circle stands for wholeness and completeness, and for intersex people's right to bodily autonomy and to be who and how they want to be. It's flown on Intersex Awareness Day (26 October) and Intersex Day of Remembrance (8 November). An earlier intersex flag by Natalie Phox used pink, blue, purple and white stripes. You'll also sometimes see products using older terms, but "intersex" is the respectful, current term.
What the colours mean
| Yellow | Chosen as a colour not associated with gender | |
|---|---|---|
| Purple circle | Wholeness and completeness, and the right to bodily autonomy and to be who and how we want to be |
The colour bar above shows the flag's palette, not a drawing of it: chevrons, circles and symbols aren't shown. Meanings are as commonly given by the flag's designer or community, and some flags have more than one accepted reading.
