Rainbow Pride Flag
The rainbow flag is the best-known symbol of LGBTQ+ pride anywhere in the world. San Francisco artist and activist Gilbert Baker created it for the city's Gay Freedom Day in June 1978, at the suggestion of the politician Harvey Milk, who wanted a positive symbol to replace the pink triangle used against gay men in Nazi Germany. Baker's first flags had eight colours, but hot pink and turquoise were dropped within a year because the fabric was hard to source. That left the six-stripe version that is flown today: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. Each colour was given a meaning, from life and healing to nature and spirit. The design isn't owned by anyone, which helped it spread. It's now flown at Pride marches, on public buildings and in shop windows, and printed in countless variations: vertical stripes, hashtag and heart designs, swirls, and versions with gender symbols. A standard UK outdoor flag is 5 x 3 feet (about 150 x 90 cm).
