Straight Ally Flag
The straight ally flag is for heterosexual and cisgender people who want to show support for LGBTQ+ friends, family and colleagues. It combines black and white horizontal stripes, a design sometimes used to represent heterosexuality, with a rainbow. Usually the rainbow forms a chevron or a large letter "A" for ally. There's no recorded designer, and several layouts are sold under the same name. Allies fly it at Pride marches, in workplaces during Pride Month, and at home. Some LGBTQ+ people prefer allies to simply fly the rainbow or Progress flag instead, so think about the setting before you choose. It's widely stocked and makes a good choice for a school or workplace ally network. Like most flags in this guide, the Straight Ally Flag is usually sold in the UK as a 5 x 3 ft (about 150 x 90 cm) polyester flag with two metal eyelets, ready for a flagpole, wall or window.
What the colours mean
| Black and white stripes | Heterosexual people | |
|---|---|---|
| Rainbow chevron or letter A | Support for LGBTQ+ people |
The colour bar above shows the flag's palette, not a drawing of it: chevrons, circles and symbols aren't shown. Meanings are as commonly given by the flag's designer or community, and some flags have more than one accepted reading.
