Transgender Pride Flag

Gender Identity Flags · Designed by Monica Helms · 1999

The transgender pride flag was designed in 1999 by Monica Helms, a trans woman and US Navy veteran, and first flown at a Pride parade in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2000. It has five horizontal stripes: light blue, pink, white, pink and light blue. Helms explained that the blue and pink are the traditional colours for baby boys and girls, and the white is for intersex people, those who are transitioning, and those who feel they have a neutral or undefined gender. The pattern is symmetrical, so the flag is never flown upside down, which Helms described as a symbol of trans people finding correctness in their own lives. One of the original flags is held by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. In the UK it's flown on Transgender Day of Visibility (31 March), at Trans+ Pride events and on Transgender Day of Remembrance (20 November). It's also sold with a transgender symbol in the centre or in hashtag designs.

What the colours mean

Light blue The traditional colour for baby boys
Pink The traditional colour for baby girls
White Intersex people, those transitioning, and those with a neutral or undefined gender

The colour bar above shows the flag's palette, not a drawing of it: chevrons, circles and symbols aren't shown. Meanings are as commonly given by the flag's designer or community, and some flags have more than one accepted reading.
