Bisexual Pride Flag
The bisexual pride flag was designed by Michael Page and unveiled on 5 December 1998 at the first anniversary party of BiCafe, a US bisexual social group. Page wanted a symbol that would raise the visibility of bisexual people, both in wider society and within the LGBTQ+ community. The flag has a wide magenta stripe at the top, a wide royal-blue stripe at the bottom, and a narrower lavender stripe where the two overlap. Page said the purple blends into both colours "just as bi people blend into both the gay/lesbian and straight communities". The flag isn't trademarked and is free for anyone to use. Bi Visibility Day, on 23 September each year, is the busiest time to see it flown in the UK. You'll also find it in hashtag designs and versions with the overlapping-triangles bi symbol.
What the colours mean
| Magenta | Attraction to the same gender | |
|---|---|---|
| Lavender | Attraction to more than one gender | |
| Royal blue | Attraction to a different gender |
The colour bar above shows the flag's palette, not a drawing of it: chevrons, circles and symbols aren't shown. Meanings are as commonly given by the flag's designer or community, and some flags have more than one accepted reading.
